Roses are generally associated with elegance and dignity, primly adorning your vases in the living room, or blooming decorously on your well-trimmed rose bushes. But to experience their true beauty in their natural surroundings you need to head where wild roses grow. In spite of all efforts of man to shift focus on to the luscious hybrids, the wild rose holds it's own in the wild and is still rampant all over the planet.

Wild roses are found flourishing in gay abandon in many places in North America, the Mediterranean, and Asia (primarily in China). There are at least 100 known native species of the wild rose growing in different parts of the globe. The United States of America is also home to many varieties of the wild rose.

1. Eastern States: The Carolina
2. Atlantic Seabed to Nebraska: The Swamp
3. Ontario to the Rockies via Texas: The Prairie
4. Rockies to the Cascades: The Woods Wild
5. Upper Pacific Coast from Alaska to California: The Nootka
6. West of Sierra Nevada: The Californica

Some world-famous wild roses are:

a. Musk (Mediterranean & the Himalayas)
b. Cherokee (or) MaCartney (North America)
c. Chestnut (China)
d. Rugosa (Japan)
e. Scotch Yellow and Dog Rose (Britain)

Many birds like the cardinals and thrushes, and wild animals like bears, coyotes, squirrels, and deer feed on wild roses. Humans too look to wild rose hips for their anti-oxidant properties, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals.

Finding seeds of wild roses is next to impossible and if you are incredibly lucky, you may find plant cuttings in your nursery. Gardeners love wild roses as they require very little attention. They are extremely resilient and can handle tough weather conditions and adapt to different soil conditions. Other than the regular watering and yearly pruning, these plants don't require the extensive care that goes into taking care of hybrids. Wild roses are fragrant and when in bloom, have a splendid display of beautiful blooms. Each bloom has just five petals and in some rare cases up to 7 petals. This is one of the major distinguishing features of a truly wild rose. The Multiflora and the Rugosa are much sought after for landscaping and can be found everywhere in North America.

However, as the wild rose blooms just once a year, some gardeners prefer their nearly wild counterparts or the entirely man-made hybrids to keep their garden in flower throughout the season.
